Benefits of having a computer science degree
A computer degree can be very beneficial.
A computer science degree focuses on various aspects of computer engineering, whether it is building new computers, working with networks, building websites, repairing computers or even developing new programs and software for computers. This field is on track to become one of the most sought-after degrees by many companies across the world. Because of this, there are many benefits to obtaining a computer science degree.
One of the best benefits to having a computer science degree is the money that you can command right after graduation. Computer science graduates from the University of Illinois were able to get jobs with a starting salary around $72,000 in 2009. Some computer science careers had starting pay as high as $105,000 in 2009. Companies are willing to pay high salaries to highly qualified computer science majors because more and more business is done through the computer and Internet. Highly qualified information technology and computer staff can make the difference between a highly successful company and a failing company.
Graduates with computer science degrees have a significant advantage in job placement. At the University of Illinois, all graduating computer science majors had an average of 2.3 job offers each at graduation or soon afterward in spring of 2009. Computer science majors at Georgia Tech’s College of Computing had an 87 percent placement rate after graduation in 2009. Since every industry needs some form of computer knowledge, computer science majors will always be in high demand.
A computer science degree is useful in many occupations, and the technical knowledge can increase an employee’s chances for career advancement. Some companies even provide top information technology professionals with management or chief executive officer jobs that oversee the entire computer section of an organization. Computer science graduates who decide that working with computers is not for them can still put their skills to use in any career.
Wide Career Use
More sectors of business than ever are taking advantage of the computer science market. In the article “Want a Job? Get a Computer Science Degree,” Carolyn Duffy Marsan spoke with Cedric Stallworth, Georgia Tech’s assistant dean of undergraduate enrollment. Stallworth stated that many industries need the knowledge that a computer science major can provide to their organizations. Insurance companies, networking companies, credit card companies, defense companies and software development companies will always need highly qualified computer staff. The medical industry also benefits from employees with computer science degrees.
