SEXUAL HEALTH: What You Need To Know About These 6 Common STDs

Sexually Transmitted Diseases or STDs are diseases that spread from one person to another via sexual contact. It spreads when a person carrying the disease-causing organism engages in any kind of sexual activity including, oral, vaginal, anal or genital with another partner without using protection.

The best way to prevent an STD is to practice safe sex at all times. Even so, the number of STD cases is on a rise as many people do not recognise the disease quickly and therefore continue to spread it further.

This article highlights some of the most common STDs one should watch out for.

Chlamydia – Chlamydia is one of the most common STD’s. It is caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis which affects a man’s penile urethra and a woman’s cervix. Many times people don’t realise they’ve contracted the disease for months or even years. The most common symptoms to diagnose chlamydia include burning while urinating, abnormal genital discharge and pain during intercourse. A person can be best protected from Chlamydia by practicing safe sex. Chlamydia is also curable.

AIDS/HIV – AIDS/HIV is probably the most commonly known and feared STD. It is caused by a virus called the human immunodeficiency virus, which can be found in any bodily fluids including semen, blood, or breast milk. Most people who’ve contracted the disease show symptoms like flu, fatigue, swollen lymph glands, skin rash, nausea within two months. Although there is no complete cure for AIDS, if diagnosed early, it can be prevented from progressing with a combination of highly active anti-retroviral drugs.

Herpes – Herpes is a silent disease and one may not even know about it if your partner has it. It is contagious and can spread via skin to skin touch. For example, mouth to genital or genital to genital. There are times where people don’t show visible sores but the most common indication of herpes are sores that arise on the penis, vagina, anus or mouth. Even though there is no permanent cure to herpes, there are medical treatments to treat it. Once infected, this virus never goes away and keeps reoccurring two to four times a year.

Crabs – Crabs or pubic lice are mites that lodge themselves in your genitals, hands, fingers or chest hair. They appear as eggs or lice attached to the hair and can spread if left untreated. They cause a person to itch the affected area. Crabs are passed via sexual contact but they can also be contracted from infected bed linen, clothing or toilet seats.

Syphilis – Syphilis is a serious STD, which may not always show symptoms and can be very dangerous. It is caused by a bacterial infection called Treponema Pallidum and is transmitted via direct contact when there is no condom involved. Although symptoms are rare, sores around the rectum, vagina, mouth or genital area indicate the presence of the syphilis virus. There can be one or more sores that appear like big bug bites that are painless. They could also be accompanied by hair loss, sore throat or patchy white skin rash. The easiest way to diagnose it is by testing your blood. The good part is that it can be treated by penicillin or tetracycline. But if left untreated it can cause severe problems like blindness, brain or heart damage or death.

Genital Warts – Genital warts are the most commonly contracted STD. They are caused by a virus called Human Papilloma, which pops up in form of warts around the genital area, hence the name genital warts. Once a person is infected, it may take about three months for the warts to appear. These warts are highly contagious and can cause other symptoms like muscle aches, pain while urinating or swollen glands near the genitals. Even if a person doesn’t see any warts but experiences the following symptoms, he/she should visit a doctor immediately before it gets serious. Unfortunately, this virus cannot be permanently treated although the warts caused by it can be removed every time they appear.

Female Student Sexually Assaulted Riot Cop With… Kiss

An Italian student protester has been charged with sexual assault after she was pictured kissing a riot police officer’s helmet during a demonstration last month.

The 20-year-old student was photographed kissing officer Salvatore Piccione during a protest against a planned rail link in Northern Italy.

Construction of the high-speed line is expected to reduce journey time from Milan to Paris from seven to four hours.

The photograph of Nina De Chiffre subsequently went viral on social media and was hailed as a symbol of peaceful protest in the country.

However, COISP, a union representing Italian police officers, later revealed that they had lodged a complaint with Turin prosecutors.

Franco Maccari, the union’s general secretary told La Repubblica: “We have accused the protester of sexual violence and insulting a public official.

“If the policeman had kissed her, World War III would have broken out,” he said.

“Or what if I had patted her on the behind? She would have been outraged. So if she does that to a man on duty, should it be tolerated?”, he added.

“A kiss is a positive thing,” he said. “But in this context, between these two people, it was just disrespect.”

It later emerged that Nina De Chiffre had not only kissed the officer but had also licked her fingers and touched his mouth.

According to reports the protester has since been charged with “sexual violence” and causing “offence to a public official”.

Riot officer Salvatore Piccione said: “ When I’m wearing my uniform I represent the police institution, and I have an obligation not to react to provocation.”

“The important thing is that, in the end, the demonstration went ahead without disturbance.”

REVEALED: Why Mercy Johnson Is Nigeria’s Highest Paid & Most Sought After Actress PLUS How Much She Charges For A Movie

Mercy Johnson Okojie is the highest paid actress in Nollywood right now. Besides being one of the most sought after actresses, the dark skinned actress has placed herself on a pedestal where she now charges up to N2million fee for a movie.

In the last few years, films with Mercy Johnson’s name and face in it, have some what become an indication that the film will turn-out a best-seller. Recognising this fact, it is no wonder the actress has pushed up her fees high up for marketers and producers who request her to feature in their flicks.

A few months ago, the Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) threatened to ban the actress for allegedly becoming exorbitant with her fees, which have shot up as high up as N2m for a movie role, while the rest of her peers are paid between N700,000 and N1.2million. In her response, Johnson answered her critics to go for less payable actresses, if they are unable to pay her by saying,‘Wats wrong when u keep quiet till u no wats up? no petition, no complain just fees those who can’t afford Heineken should stick with ‘Kai kai’.

The 28year old actress made her acting debut in the movie ‘The Maid‘ in which she played the role of a possessed house help. Her performance in the movie shot her into the limelight and has acted in other major movies ever since. With all her talents and assets, it is no wonder some media pundits have agreed that she is the most exceptional actress for the year 2013.

When Nollywood filmmaker, Charles Novia drew up his list of the ‘Best 5 Nollywood Actresses for 2013′, it was not surprising to find Mercy Johnson’s name on the top of the list. ‘There’s something ultra-natural and organic about Mercy Johnson which confounds even her critics’, Novia said. ‘In four movies I watched in 2013, which she starred in, she was the epitome of delightful characterisation. Watch her in the ‘Dumebi’ spawn of movies and you would appreciate how her talent has evolved since she came back from her maternity break’.

Last week, MJ as the actress is fondly called became the subject of discussion on twitter when Rubbin’ Minds host and Ebony Life TV presenter, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu tweeted his admiration for the actress’ work. ‘Mercy Johnson makes a lot of ‘leading ladies’ in Nollywood look like amateurs. Yes, I’m talking about all your favorite divas and A listers’ Uchendu tweeted.

‘I’ve seen her do everything VERY WELL. Diva, runs girl, villager, corporate chick, mother, grandmother, villain, hero. All!’, Uchendu continued.

Early this year when she returned back from the US where she went to deliver her baby girl, MJ had several scripts waiting for her. NET sources had confirmed that between March and July, MJ had no less than 20 scripts waiting for her being sent by marketers and producers in Nigeria and Ghana.

Already, since her return to Nollywood, she’s featured in about six productions, including the Tchidi Chikere produced comedy, ‘Dumebi Goes to School‘, a sequel to the hilarious ‘Dumebi The Dirty Girl’ which won her theaward for the Best Actress in Comedy Role’ at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA).

Besides her acting skills, everybody just loves Mercy Johnson. She’s pretty much the ultimate girl crush right now. One thing for sure is that she isn’t planning to relinquish her position anytime soon as she tweeted, ‘Na God do am and only he can take it back. Not yet time gurls stay back‘.

Commercial Bus Driver Rapes Passenger From 7p.m To 10a.m

A commercial bus driver, identified as Emeka Ugwudiobi has been accused of raping one of his passengers from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. at gun point in an uncompleted building around Mayor Market, Enugu.

According to the prosecution counsel, Mr Francis Ajagu, the driver plies the New Market-Gariki route and the victim was one of his passengers.

On that fateful day, the driver noticed only the victim was remaining in the bus and drove to  an uncompleted building beside the Mayor Market and started raping the victim.

Ajagu said the victim was raped from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. without break and that the pleas of the victim to allow her rest fell on deaf ears. The victim was rescued by one Mr Chidubem Ezeorah, a passerby who ran into the scene and reported the case to the police.

He said that the victim could hardly  stand on her feet when the police came to her rescue in the  uncompleted building.

However, Mr Obeta Peter, the counsel to the accused, who described the accused as a responsible man with a wife and four children said Emeka had been driving for the past 16 years and that nobody had ever complained that he was a rapist.

He denied that his client had ever set eyes on the victim before, adding that there was no way a bus driver would carry a gun inside his bus and the police would not notice.

Justice Dorathy Agishi ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody while adjourning the case to Feb. 26, 2014 for further hearing.
